Important Notes:
- This guide is not a mold remediation protocol and does not replace the services of a licensed professional.
- Homeowners are legally allowed to perform mold cleanup on their own property, regardless of the size of the project, under Texas Occupations Code §1958.102.
- However, if you hire a contractor or company to perform mold remediation and the affected area is 25 contiguous square feet or more, Texas law requires that the work be performed by a licensed Mold Remediation Contractor following a protocol prepared by a licensed Mold Assessment Consultant.
We encourage you to review the guide before beginning any cleanup project to better understand safe practices and the proper steps involved. For larger projects, or if you are unsure, NTX Enviro recommends consulting a licensed professional to ensure the work is performed safely and in compliance with Texas regulations.
Products and supplies to perform minor mold cleanup are widely available at most home improvement stores. Commonly used items include:
- Grease-cutting detergent (e.g., Simple Green® or a similar household cleaner)
- Antimicrobial spray such as Concrobium® Mold Control (often found in the paint aisle at Home Depot or Lowe’s)
- N95 respirator (NIOSH-approved)
- Protective gloves (disposable or reusable)
- Absorbent rags or disposable wipes
